Product Review: The Dell PowerEdge R630

Aventis Systems top-selling product, the Dell PowerEdge R630, is a dual-socket 1U rackmount server with a compact design that belies its expansive capabilities.

The 13th-generation rack server condenses 2U performance. This makes it well suited for data-intensive applications like virtualization, transactional databases and analytical processing solutions such as Oracle and SQL. Because of its densely packed capabilities, the PowerEdge R630 also is perfect when space is at a premium.

Some of its key benefits include superior I/O performance, high-density processing and flexible storage capacity. The ability to consolidate data center operations adds to the affordability of an R630 system.

Packed With Power

Dual Intel Xeon E52600 v3 family of processors—boasting more cache and better power efficiency than the prior generation—power the server for up to 18 cores and 45MB cache per CPU with a total of 72 threads. This provides the power for enhanced functionality such as improved virtual machine (VM) performance and better response times for more concurrent users.

For faster speeds, the R630 scales up to 24 DIMMs to support up to 768GB total of DDR4 RAM, running at maximum memory speeds of 2133MT/s when used in a dual configuration. In addition, thanks to its 12GB PowerEdge RAID controllers (PERC9), you can increase the number of transactions per second for online transaction-processing databases. With 12GB of maximum storage, the R630 has double the throughput performance and cache of previous generation controllers.

Compared to the previous generation, the R630 also has more storage options for latency-sensitive applications. It has several storage configurations that support SATA, SSD and SAS card options.

There are up to 1.5TB RAM configurations with as many as 24 1.8” SATA SSDs for 23TB of storage capacity, so the PowerEdge R630 can expand to grow with your needs. It’s also available in two additional configurations—one with as many as eight 2.5-inch bays and another with a maximum of 10 2.5-inch bays for SSDs with up to four PowerEdge Express Flash PCIe SSDs to reduce storage latency. The R630 also supports two to three front-mount drive bays.

Managing the Server

You can manage the R630 individually, collectively, in-person or remotely with the integrated iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller. The embedded iDRAC8 management technology eliminates the need to install additional software for remote monitoring and management.

Using the OpenManage Mobile app, you can monitor the system with your smartphone. The iDRAC Quick Sync functionality allows you to connect to the R630 through Near Field Communications to access status reports and logs. For more involved management, you can connect a laptop via USB to the server’s embedded iDRAC9 management console interface.

The highly versatile R630 allows administrators to choose different PERC controllers—S130, H330, H730P, H730 or H830. To make workload deployment easier and faster, it offers the convenience of Dell’s out-of-the-box template library for SharePoint, Exchange, Skype for Business, UC&C and SQL configurations.

The server’s compatible operating systems include:

The R630 is compatible with 495-watt, 750-watt or 1100-watt platinum-rated power supplies or 750-watt titanium-rated supplies. For reliable access, it includes essentials like redundant power supply units (PSUs); a dual SD card option for fail-safe hypervisors; and hot plug and swappable PSUs, HDDs and cooling fans.

Chassis Size

With the 8-by-2.5-inch drive configuration, the R630 is 1.68 inches tall, 27.57 inches deep and 18.98 inches wide. The 10-by-2.5-inch and 24-by-1.8-inch drive configurations are slightly deeper, measuring 29.72 inches.

Purchasing the R630

Boasting 2.5 times the performance of the previous model at a comparable cost, the R630 is a great buy, even for large businesses.

Aventis Systems offers the R630 in two different chassis options: an eight-bay 2.5-inch hard drive model and a 10-bay 2.5-inch hard drive model. We offer these systems with SAS or SATA hard drive options, as well as solid state drives for a maximum capacity of 20TB of internal storage.

All servers from Aventis System include a three-year comprehensive warranty with eligibility for optional express warranties and on-site support services.
