VMware Product Review: vSphere Essentials, Essentials Plus, and Standard

VMware is a premier technology company, and one of the leading names in virtualization, that provides cloud and virtual infrastructure software products that run on Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems. Since its inception, VMware has provided innovative solutions to small and medium-sized businesses that are turning toward cloud computing and virtualization—something that will undoubtedly be integrated across all businesses within the next 5-10 years.

Among the innovative products from VMware is the vSphere suite series, specializing in cloud computing. The optional features in the vSphere suite include high availability, data protection, fault tolerance, and storage policy-based management.

VMware vSphere Standard

VMware vSphere Standard essentially provides “server consolidation and business continuity” (VMware.com) with a standard vCenter standard server. The series of features include “vMotion, high availability, data protection, fault tolerance, vShield Endpoint, and Virtual Volumes” (VMware.com). It includes entitlement for 1 CPU each, and central management features. vSphere Standard provides basic consolidation that speeds up application deployment, offering a low up-front cost option.

VMware vSphere Essentials

vSphere Essentials is more targeted toward small business management and can connect up to three physical servers with central management. The Essentials kit comes with “server virtualization and consolidation with centralized management, vCenter server essentials, 3 servers with up to 2 processors each, and vSphere Hypervisor” (VMware.com). It offers industry-leading virtualization for a low, up-front cost while easing management.

VMware vSphere Essentials Plus

vSphere Essentials Plus comes with features similar to the Essentials, with the following exceptions: “server virtualization and consolidation plus business continuity, vMotion, high availability, data protection, vShield Endpoint, and vSphere Replication. Superior application availability and data protection services set vSphere Essentials Plus apart from other options.

Each of these VMware products come with customizable options, including the length of the software subscription and support options.

The products from VMware offer an incredible return on investment. Not only are they cost-effective, but they perform optimally for businesses of any size. VMware software is most known for its hypervisors which creates and runs virtual machines directly on the server hardware without requiring an additional underlying OS, which leads to lower system overhead.
