Product Review: The Dell PowerEdge R720xd

The Dell PowerEdge R720xd rack server is designed with the small to mid-size business owner in mind.

This powerful, award-winning two-socket 2U rack server has ultra-dense internal storage. It is ideal for businesses that need scalability of both memory and overall storage capacity and also require a high level of Input/Output (I/O) performance.

The Dell PowerEdge server line is known for its ability to handle tough workloads for data centers of all sizes. These servers, available in many different configurations and generations, have a long history of reliability and manageability.

Configurations are user friendly and reasonably priced. They can be expanded to offer more memory capacity and scalability options as your business needs grow.

The PowerEdge R720 comes in two models: the R720 and the R720xd. The PowerEdge R720xd is a high-end server ideal for both large and small data centers, as well as web hosting, email and many other enterprise applications.

With the R720xd, you can quickly access and process large amounts of data thanks to the server's huge local storage capacity. The PowerEdge R720xd from Aventis Systems also comes with top-of-the-line hardware and software installed and is a high-value, high-performance server that will fit all your business needs.

The PowerEdge R720xd can support up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processor families, ranging up to 12 cores and 30MB cache per CPU. Reinforced with reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features, the R720xd is a solid choice for outstanding reliability and performance.

The hard drive bay options in the PowerEdge R720xd are different than the R720's options. The R720xd has room for 24 2.5-inch drives or 12 3.5-inch drives supporting SATA, SAS or solid state drives, as well as all hot plugs.

There is also room on the back for two additional 2.5-inch drives. There are six available PCI slots in the R720xd along with two X16 full-height, full-length slots; one X8 full-height, full-length slot; and three X8 half-height, half-length slots.

Another of the PowerEdge R720xd's valuable, stand-out features is its ability to be customized. You can easily tailor your network throughput to match your unique application needs. You can also choose the right network fabric for your business without using up a valuable PCI slot. Instead, the PowerEdge R720xd allows you to pick the speed, technology and vendor you need to easily share and manage bandwidth on your connections.

In total, the PowerEdge R720xd server can support up to 768GB of memory (or 24 DIMMS) with the Intel Xeon E5-2600 processor.

For RAID controllers, there is also an option for Dell's PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) cards including the H310, H710, H710p and H810 for external RAID support. Network adapters are supported in the R720xd, as well as a wide variety of power supplies to power the server in dual configuration.

Combined with the Dell OpenManage systems management portfolio — which includes the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) with Lifecycle Controller — IT administrators can manage the PowerEdge R720xd in physical, local, remote and virtual environments. You can seamlessly operate the server with or without a systems management agent and can operate in band or out of band.

The rear SD card reader and dedicated management port also become available with an iDRAC license that is attached to the server.

OpenManage easily integrates and connects to most third-party management systems, allowing you to maintain your existing technologies. Operating systems including Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (including Hyper-V v2), Windows Small Business Server 2011 and Windows Server 2012 are all supported, as well as Red Hat Enterprise and Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Citrix' Xenserver, VMware's vSphere (including ESX and ESXi) and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization are all also supported by the PowerEdge R720xd.

The PowerEdge R720xd is a heavy server, weighing in at almost 70 pounds fully configured. At 19 inches wide, it easily fits into a two-system rack.
